Volkswagen Golf Named 'Best Car of the Half Century'
The iconic hatchback celebrated its 50th anniversary earlier this year.

Few cars have stood the test of time like the Volkswagen Golf has. Earlier this year, the iconic car celebrated its 50th anniversary.
Continuing the celebrations, the Golf has won ‘Best Car of the Half Century’ as part of the Best Cars of the Year from the New World Car Championships.
The news was announced at The British Motor Show where the eighth-generation Golf was on display for visitors to look around.
Judges for the award included independent car designers, motorsports personalities, journalists and broadcasters. As well as media professionals, vehicle retailers and motoring events organisers.
Notable judges who voted for the Golf’s win included John Oates – car enthusiast and one half of the iconic duo Hall and Oates. Plus, founder of the awards, automotive journalist, Mike Rutherford.
Mike said: “Some manufacturers are barely able to keep their ‘most important’ models in production for five years. The fact that Volkswagen has been successfully building and selling petrol, diesel, pure-electric and hybrid versions of the Golf around the world for 50 years really does say it all.
“Since the very early 1980s, when I bought my first brand new Mk I version, I’ve purchased countless Golfs or run them as company cars. With some justification, it was often described as all the car you’ll ever need. And that’s as true today as it ever was.
“The Golf has, since it was born in 1974, been the car for the people.”
