Nottinghamshire Bow Out At Group Stage

Nottinghamshire’s hopes of success in the Metro Bank One Day Cup have come to an end after back-to-back defeats meant qualification from Group B is no longer possible.

On the back of an impressive victory away at Surrey, the Vertu Motors-backed side welcomed Gloucestershire to Trent Bridge knowing that another win would leave them firmly in contention to make it through to the next stage.

Notts were put in to bat first and raced to 56 in just over eight overs before Ben Slater was first man out for 38. Freddie McCann and Jack Haynes then fell in consecutive overs to leave the score on 73-3 to leave Haseeb Hameed and Lyndon James together at the crease.

The pair put on 129 for the fourth wicket before James fell for 61, with Hameed and Tom Moores adding a quickfire 80 before the captain was dismissed having hit 105 from 95 balls.

Moores followed soon after, with Nottinghamshire making 332 when the innings drew to a close in the final over.

Gloucestershire’s reply started in fine form as Miles Hammond and Cameron Bancroft put on 151 for the first wicket before Bancroft was trapped LBW by Freddie McCann for 52.

Hammond then added a further 94 with Ollie Price before he was dismissed for 157, with Gloucestershire well on the way to success – eventually wrapping up a seven wicket win with just over three overs to spare.

Essex then arrived at Trent Bridge having already been knocked out of the competition, with Notts having to take the points in order to stand any chance of progressing.

The home side were put in to bat first but struggled in comparison to the previous match to be bowled out for 218.

Matthew Montgomery top scored with 52 whilst opener Slater managed 47, but losing the final six wickets for 55 runs meant there was work to do with the ball when the visitors then went in to reply.

Luc Benkenstein fell in the fourth over to an acrobatic catch from Haynes before Tom Westley was bowled with the score on 29, with the Notts bowlers showing strong early promise.

However, a fine partnership of 185 between Robin Das and Noah Thain took Essex to within five runs of victory before Thain was trapped LBW for 83.

Das wrapped up his century with the winning runs in a seven wicket success that means Notts can no longer make it through regardless of the result of the final group game with Warwickshire.
