Nottinghamshire Battle Back For Stunning Surrey Success

Nottinghamshire battled back from defeat to Glamorgan with a fine win against Surrey in the latest round of Metro Bank One Day Cup fixture.

The Vertu Motors-backed side headed for Wales chasing a third successive victory in the competition but made a tough start to the innings as Ben Slater and Jack Haynes both departed in the first six overs with the score still in single figures.

In fact, the opening ten overs yielded just 23 runs – 14 of which came off a single over – to leave Nottinghamshire playing catch-up.

Freddie McCann and captain Haseeb Hameed added 86 for the third wickets before McCann fell two short of a half century, with Hameed going on to make 89 as he held the middle of the innings together – supported in particular by Tom Moores and Liam Patterson-White.

Hameed fell with the score on 219-6, with a late flurry from the tail allowing Notts to make a respectable 274-9 from their 50 overs.

Glamorgan however raced out the blocks in their reply, with Eddie Byrom and Will Smale reaching 59 by the end of the tenth over and going on to share an opening stand of 103 before Smale was caught off the bowling of Patterson-White.

Kiran Carlson then followed in the next over as Notts looked to fight back, but Colin Ingram then joined Byrom at the crease for a fine partnership that carried their side all the way to victory by eight wickets – with Byron unbeaten on 123 and Ingram undefeated on 103.

Notts then headed to Guildford to face a Surrey side still chasing a first win in the competition and went in to bat first, losing McCann in the seventh over for a quickfire 28 with the score on 39-1.

It brought Haynes in to the crease to join opener Slater and the pair were in fine form together as they shared a record-breaking partnership for games between the two sides – putting on 187 before Haynes was caught for 86.

Slater went on to make a fine 164 from 119 balls – which included nine sixes and twelve fours – to carry his side to 378-6, with both Tom Moores and Matthew Montgomery adding important runs late in the innings.

Surrey's response started in positive fashion as Ryan Patel and Dom Sibley put on 66 for the first wicket, before Ben Geddes came in to push the score into three figures before he fell to a fine catch from Moores.

Rory Burns fell without scoring and a the loss of three wickets for less than 20 runs – including Sibley – left Surrey needing a miracle at 163-6.

Connor McKerr kept the faint hopes alive with a swash-buckling 71 from 36 balls but the Nottinghamshire total would be too much as the home side were dismissed for 271 – with Rob Lord impressing with the ball as he took 5-45.

That gave Notts a third win in the competition by 107 runs to sit third in Group B.
