Burnley Bow Out With Forest Loss
Burnley’s Premier League adventure drew to a close with a home loss to Nottingham Forest as the curtain came down on the 2023/24 season for the Vertu Motors-backed side.
Burnley had already been consigned to the drop following a defeat to Tottenham in the previous game, and headed into the final round of fixtures bidding to try and sign off with a third home victory of the campaign.
Things didn’t start well however when Anthony Elanga managed to beat his man on the right hand side and delivered a cross to the back post for Chris Wood to smash home against his former club.
With Forest chasing a point that would officially confirm their own survival – which was always likely given their goal difference – the visitors continued to push forwards and went two clear when Wood netted again, albeit if fortuitous circumstances.
Morgan Gibbs-White broke into the box before laying the ball off to Ryan Yates, and his shot was deflected off Wood and into the net with Arijianet Muric wrong-footed on his line.
Although the flag initially went up for offside, Wood was deemed to be onside after a VAR check and the goal allowed to stand.
Zeki Amdouni fired over when well-placed to pull one back, with Wilson Odobert also firing over from the edge of the box shortly before the break.
There would be reason for the home fans to smile before the end when a shot from Josh Cullen from outside the box took a deflection of Murillo and nestled in the corner, with Odobert then firing wide again late on as the Clarets chased an equaliser.
The defeat leaves Burnley 19th in the final table, with the game marking the final appearance for both Jack Cork and Johann Berg Gudmundsson, who will leave during the summer when their contracts expire.
