Plymouth Put First Points On The Board

Plymouth Argyle are up and running in the EFL Championship after picking up a first point of the season in the home game with Hull City.

The Vertu Motors-backed side headed into the game on the back of a first win of the Wayne Rooney-era in the EFL Cup first round, with the new boss looking for his team to respond from the disappointing opening weekend loss to Sheffield Wednesday.

Having clearly taken confidence from the mid-week success against Cheltenham Town, Plymouth put in a much improved performance and could have gone ahead when capital Joe Edwards pounced on a poor pass out from visiting ‘keeper Ivor Pandur but could only fire wide.

Hull also had chances in the first half, with a shot from Abdulkadir Omur being blocked before the Turkish international could only steer the rebound wide of the post.

Plymouth eventually hit the front in the second half, with Morgan Whittaker cutting in from the right hand side before playing the ball in to Ryan Hardie – who had already flashed a shot wide of the post.

Hardie tried to flick the ball past his marker and whilst he was unable to fashion an effort of his own, the ball instead fell at the feet of Ibrahim Cissoko to drive a low shot into the net.

Bali Mumba missed a chance to extend the lead for the Pilgrims, and Hull made them pay shortly afterwards when Lewis Coyle curled a shot from the edge of the box beyond Conor Hazard and into the corner to equalise.

Talisman Whittaker curled an effort just wide of the top corner as Arygle tried to find a winner, with Mumba and substitute Darko Gyabi also going close, whilst Hull had chances of their own – albeit without seriously troubling Hazard in the home goal.
