For the second week in succession, Yorkshire’s record in the Metro Bank One Day Cup was one win and one loss after home games against Sussex and Gloucestershire.

The game against Sussex at York came on the back of a disappointing loss to Nottinghamshire in the second match of the group stage, with Yorkshire being put in to bat first in front of a crowd of more than 3,000.

The innings didn’t start well when Will Luxton was bowled in the first over with the score on just two bringing captain Shan Masood to the crease alongside Fin Bean.

They shared 51 for the second wicket before Bean – who had earlier been dropped without scoring – was caught behind for 37.

Masood then added a further 60 runs for the third wicket alongside James Wharton, and had brief partnerships with both George Hill and Henry Duke before he was run out for 63 with the score on 170-5.

Duke and Dom Bess helped to add crucial runs in the lower order as they scored 38 and 37 respectively, as Yorkshire set the visitors a target of 262 for victory.

Sussex lost two wickets early on when Tom Haines was run out by Luxton and then Ben Coad bowled Henry Rogers to leave the score on 23-2, but Charlie Tear and Tom Clark added 95 before Tear was caught off the bowling of Dom Bess – who then removed Clark in his next over.

At 127/4 at the half-way stage, Sussex were ahead of where Yorkshire had been at the same stage but whereas the home side pushed on in the second half of the innings, the visitors instead started to falter.

Zach Lion-Cachet and Danial Ibrahim departed in successive overs to leave Sussex six down and when Ollie Carter was caught off the bowling of Dan Moriarty with the score on 198-7, it was a case of when – not if – Yorkshire wrapped up the win.

The final three wickets were duly wrapped up in quick succession as Sussex were bowled out for 212, to give Yorkshire a second victory in three games.

York was again the host for the visit of Gloucestershire, who won the toss and elected to bat first, making a steady start to the innings before Cameron Bancroft was first man out with the score on 36.

Ollie Price joined Miles Hammond at the crease and the pair put on 88 for the second wicket before Moriarty dismissed Hammond shortly after he had reached his half-century to leave the score on 124-2.

Four quick wickets in the middle of the innings saw Gloucestershire slip to 191-6, but 98 from Price would prove to be key as the visitors made it to 251-9 by the close of the innings.

Yorkshire lost Bean in just the second over of their reply before Luxton also fell cheaply, leaving Masood and Wharton to steady the ship with a partnership of 113 for the third wicket.

The pair fell in quick succession however, and from that stage on, wickets fell at regular intervals with 41 from Matthew Revis being the only major score in the lower order as Yorkshire were dismissed for 215.

Four games in, Yorkshire now sit sixth in Group B, albeit with a game in hand on four of the teams above them in the table.

Off the pitch, the search for a new first-team head coach is underway after the announcement that Ottis Gibson will leave his role at the end of the campaign.

Gibson took up the role in 2021 and has Yorkshire well-placed in the race for promotion from Division 2 of the County Championship this season.
