Do Electric Cars Need a Service and MOT?
In this article, we take a look at whether electric cars require servicing and MOTs, and the things that will be checked.
Electric vehicles (EVs) are very different from petrol or diesel cars in terms of how they work. Since they are built and driven differently, you might think that servicing and maintenance may be different too.
Like all vehicles, electric cars will indeed require servicing and MOTs. There are some key differences, however, which we’ll go through in this article. Read on for everything you need to know.
What does an electric car service look like?
While not a legal requirement like MOTs, servicing helps ensure your vehicle continues to run smoothly.
EVs contain far fewer moving parts than petrol or diesel cars. With no engine, oil and filters, or cambelts requiring attention, this makes EV servicing often a lot simpler than with non-EVs.
It’s still important to get your EV serviced regularly to make sure there are no developing issues. Brake pads and discs can still wear out, while heavy EV batteries can affect your steering and suspension over time.
When servicing an EV, the following items will be checked:
- Battery health
- Charging cable and port
- High-voltage cables
- Battery coolant
- Brake pads and discs
- Cabin and air conditioning filters
- Steering linkages
- Drive shafts
In terms of when an EV needs servicing, this depends on whether you go for scheduled or varied servicing. Scheduled servicing is done at a set time (e.g. every 12 months or 10,000 miles), while varied servicing will be indicated using the car’s onboard sensors.
Since they have fewer moving parts, manufacturers often set longer intervals between services for EVs. If you own an electric car, you can find more information on this in your user manual. You can also read more about electric car servicing.
What does an electric car MOT look like?
When it comes to MOTs for electric cars, these work largely the same as with petrol or diesel cars.
As with internal combustion engine (ICE) cars, EVs will require an MOT when they turn three years old. This will be followed by an annual MOT every year afterwards.
There is a long list of items that are checked during an MOT. These include everything from brakes and tyres to lights and electrical systems and even windscreen wipers.
If you don’t get an MOT for your vehicle, you could be fined up to £1,000 – so it’s vital to make sure you take your vehicle in when it is due.
If you are especially forgetful, you can sign up for mobile MOT service reminders on the Government’s website. Your dealership however should get in touch with you to help you arrange any upcoming services or MOTs that may be due.
Electric car MOTs vs petrol or diesel car MOTs
Although the principle is the same, there are some differences between electric car MOTs and petrol or diesel car MOTs.
For instance, EVs will not require the emissions test that petrol or diesel cars do since they produce zero emissions. This test normally involves a probe inserted into a car’s exhaust system to measure the level of pollutants. This is then used to determine whether the car meets emissions standards.
How do I get my electric car MOT?
Normally, you will receive a letter, phone call or email from your dealership when you are due an MOT.
At Vertu Motors, you can book a service, MOT or both for your electric car online, or by booking an appointment at your local dealership.
How much does a service or MOT cost for an electric car?
Although the process is simpler, electric car servicing will cost you similar to that of a petrol or diesel car.
With a service plan, you can enjoy savings when paying as you go with a fixed monthly or annual fee. Our Priority Service Plans allow you to save up to 25% compared to one-off rates and are a great way to help you get organised.
As for MOTs, the Government caps charges for these at £54.85 for all cars. This means you won’t be charged any more for MOTs simply because you own an electric vehicle.
Can a normal garage MOT an electric car?
Any garage that has completed EV-specific training should be able to carry out an MOT for an electric car.
However, it’s important to make sure that you use a credible, reliable garage for any MOTs or servicing. EVs require specially trained technicians and diagnostic tools due to their advanced technology.
With many of our dealerships accredited by the Electric Vehicle Approved (EVA) scheme, we have the expertise to help maintain your EV.
Our technicians receive specialist EV training, along with the latest tools and equipment, leaving your EV in good hands.
