Yorkshire Suffer First Defeat
Yorkshire tasted defeat in the County Championship for the first time this season after Middlesex secured victory in the third game of the campaign at Lord’s.
The Vertu Motors-backed side was chasing a first win of the year after draws with both Leicestershire and Gloucestershire, and were put in to bat on the opening day by Middlesex skipper Toby Roland-Jones.
Adam Lyth fell early for 15 before rain intervened and caused a delay to play with Yorkshire having reached 41-1.
After Roland-Jones removed Finlay Bean, Yorkshire collapsed from 64-2 to 98-7 before a late cameo from Ben Coad – who hit 24 from 18 balls – saw his side reach 159 before being bowled out.
Nathan Fernandes and Max Holden were both out before the end of the day as Middlesex reached 84-2 at the close but impressive bowling from Coad, who took 4-59, and a five wicket haul from Jordan Thompson restricted Middlesex to 246.
Trailing by 93, Yorkshire lost both Lyth and captain Shan Masood early on before Bean, Joe Root and Harry Brook all departed with their side still behind – with Brook out for a first ball duck having managed just three in the first innings.
George Hill would hit 75 as Yorkshire batted into the third day before being dismissed for 244 – leaving the hosts a target of 158 to take victory.
Although Coad was able to dismiss Mark Stoneman in the first over, Middlesex were able to knock off the required runs for the loss of just four wickets to secure the win, with Yorkshire having to settle for three bonus points.
A home game with Derbyshire is next up, starting on Friday.
