Yorkshire Strengthen Promotion Chances
Yorkshire’s late season charge in County Championship Division Two continued with victory over Glamorgan making it five wins in six games.
The Vertu Motors-backed side had moved into second spot in the table with victory by an innings against Leicestershire and headed to Sophia Gardens looking to keep the pressure on Sussex at the top, and also maintain a buffer to Middlesex behind.
Yorkshire were put in bat first by the home side and made steady progress through the opening day, starting off with a partnership of 67 for the first wicket between Adam Lyth and Finlay Bean, before both were dismissed by Andy Gorvin.
Lyth had hit 46 before his dismissal and Jonathan Tattersall also made it into the 40s before being dismissed for 41 following a partnership of nearly 100 with James Wharton, who was briefly joined by Jonny Bairstow before he departed for just two.
Wharton himself followed soon after for 63 but George Hill and Dom Bess came together at 194-5 and moved the score on to nearly 300 before Bess was trapped LBW for 50.
Hill was supported by the tail as he made it to 90 before being penultimate man out as his side were eventually bowled out for 361.
Glamorgan skipper Sam Northeast and fellow opener Asa Tribe survived the last two overs of the day without the loss of a wicket, but both were dismissed early on day two, as Northeast went LBW to Ben Coad and Tribe was caught off the bowling of Matthew Fisher.
Kiran Carlson then went to the next ball, with Ben Kellaway also falling cheaply to reduce the home side to 37-4 in the eleventh over.
Whilst Colin Ingram was starting to build an innings at one end, the wickets continued to fall at the other, with Fisher grabbing two more wickets in the shape of Chris Cooke and Timm van der Gugten with the Welsh side still yet to pass 100.
Mason Crane helped to take his side towards the follow-on target with 29 in partnership with Ingram, who followed soon afterwards for 82 – leaving James Harris and Gorvin to take their side past the follow-on mark and eventually on to 239 all out.
Lyth and Bean returned to the crease to put on 115 for the first wicket before Luth was dismissed just before the close, with the lead at 238 and the visitors would go on to make 273 in the second innings as Bean hit 57, Bess 47 and Tattersall 40 – setting a victory target of 396 on a pitch where wickets had fallen regularly.
The dismissal of Northeast in the first over set the tone as the Yorkshire bowlers went on the attack, with Coad taking four wickets amongst the top order to reduce the Welsh side to 94-5.
Opener Tribe fought hard to make a half century but from 141-7 at the end of the third day, it didn’t take Yorkshire long to clear up the tail on the final day as Glamorgan were dismissed for 209 to earn a 186 run win.
It leaves Yorkshire 20 points behind Sussex and 15 clear of Middlesex going into the final game of the season next week against Northamptonshire at Headingley.
