Yorkshire Maintain Strong Start To Vitality Blast
Yorkshire’s strong start to the Vitality Blast campaign continued with a third win leaving the Vertu Motors-backed side sitting second in the Northern section.
The latest fixture saw Derbyshire make the trip to Headingley chasing their second win of the competition, whilst Yorkshire were bidding to retain a spot near the head of the group after winning two of their opening three games.
Following a minute’s silence to honour Leeds Rugby League legend Rob Burrow following his death from Motor Neurone Disease at the age of 41, Derbyshire were put in to bat first and wasted little time in putting runs on the board – smashing 70 off the first six overs and passing 100 without the loss of a wicket.
David Lloyd was first man out for 41 with the score on 114 with Derbyshire looked set to build an impressive target but the game then turned towards the home side after Wayne Madsen and Samit Patel both followed soon afterwards.
Aneurin Donald has scored the majority of the runs in the opening partnership, but he was then caught off the bowling of debutant Ben Cliff for 84 with the score on 142-4 and the run rate dropped noticeably through the remainder of the innings before it drew to a close at 179-6.
Yorkshire’s response with the bat was impressive, as opening partners Adam Lyth and Dawid Malan attacked the Derbyshire bowlers – with Lyth in particular hitting out as he became the first player to score 4,000 T20 runs for the county.
Four sixes were amongst a total of twelve boundaries as he smashed 84 off 51 balls before being caught off the bowling of Daryn Dupavillon, having put on 137 for the first wicket with Malan.
Malan himself would go on to make an unbeaten 79 as he and Joe Root knocked off the remaining runs for a straightforward nine wicket victory.
