Yorkshire remain firmly in contention for promotion to the top tier of the County Championship after emerging unbeaten from two games against their main promotion rivals.

The Vertu Motors-backed side returned to action after the break for the One Day Cup with a home game against Sussex, who were put in to bat in tricky conditions.

Rain would impact on the opening day in Scarborough, but Yorkshire took the early advantage as three wickets from Matthew Revis restricted the visitors to 187-9 at the close.

Tom Alsop top scored with 86 not out as Sussex were bowled out for 189 on the second morning, with Yorkshire grabbing a first innings lead as Jonny Bairstow and Will Luxton both hit half centuries to secure a 137 run advantage.

Yorkshire’s bowlers were again on fine form in the second innings, with Ben Coad the pick as he took figures of 5-69 to set up an impressive victory.

Coad would help restrict Sussex to 239 to set a win target of 103, which was hit in double quick time as Yorkshire took the honours by four wickets.

Returning to Headingley to face Middlesex, Yorkshire were in control for much of the opening day, with Bairstow in particular impressing as he hit an unbeaten century – the first time he had passed 100 in first class cricket in two years.

From 372-5 at the end of the day, Yorkshire progressed to 601-6 declared on day two, with Bairstow eventually out for 160 and George Hill hitting a career best 169.

Middlesex responded well however to reach 141-1 by the close of day two, and batted throughout day three and would eventually be bowled out for 522 just before lunch on day four.

Any chance of a positive result had long since disappeared, with Yorkshire moving to 150-2 before bad light stopped play and the teams shook hands on a draw.
