Tough End To 2023 For Burnley
Burnley endured a tough end to 2023 after a late penalty resulted in defeat against high-flying Aston Villa.
The Vertu Motors-backed side headed for Villa Park having taken four points from the previous two away games, with a draw at Brighton followed by a victory at Fulham.
Villa grabbed the lead when a shot from Leon Bailey was deflected just out of reach of ‘keeper James Trafford but Burnley responded within a matter of minutes when a free-kick from wide on the left was headed back across the box for Zeki Amdouni to volley in the equaliser.
Lyle Foster had a goal ruled out for offside before Villa reclaimed the lead just before the break, with Moussa Diaby sweeping home a cross from Ollie Watkins.
Burnley’s hopes took a hit when Sander Berge was sent off for two yellow cards but Foster then fired home his first goal since taking a two-month break for his mental health to equalise for a second time.
It looked like that was going to earn Burnley a point for the third successive away game but in the final minute, Aaron Ramsey was deemed to have fouled Jhon Duran and Douglas Luiz beat Trafford from the spot.
Burnley will now kick off 2024 with a third round tie in the FA Cup against fellow Premier League side Tottenham.
