Sunderland Confirm Frenchman As New Head Coach

Sunderland has confirmed the appointment of Frenchman Regis Le Bris as new head coach on a three-year deal from the start of July.

The Vertu Motors-backed side has been on the lookout for someone to take on the role following the departure of Michael Beale from the position back in February.

Mike Dodds had guided the team through the remainder of the season in caretaker charge, with the Black Cats ending the campaign 16th in the EFL Championship standings.

Le Bris joins the club from French side Lorient, where he coached both the youth and B teams before taking control of the first team ahead of the 2022/23 season.

His first season at the helm resulted in a tenth place finish in Ligue 1 after a season that included a stunning 3-1 victory at the Parc de Princes against eventual champions Paris Saint Germain but then suffered relegation in heart-breaking fashion last season.

Despite overcoming a five goal deficit on goal difference to rivals Metz, L’Orient dropped down to Ligue 2 by virtue of away goals scored in the two games between the sides – with the sides level on the first six methods used to determine a league placing.

“I am honoured to be joining Sunderland AFC and look forward to immersing myself in the culture of the Club and the city,” he said. “I believe the best way to understand and appreciate what makes a Club unique is to connect with the people who embody its spirit - the supporters, the community and all those who contribute to its character.

“All coaches talk about their enthusiasm and vision when they start a new role. I'm certainly here to pass on my energy and my convictions, but also to listen and learn. The history of this Club is very strong, and this is a unique opportunity to be part of that legacy. I recognise the potential of our team, a group that has seen both successes and more difficult times.

“Our journey together has only just begun, and I am ambitious about what we can achieve. I want us to bring joy to our fans, not only through results, but also through our style of play, and I'm convinced that with commitment and hard work, we can write an exciting new chapter.”
