Road Tax Bands 2025

As of 1st April 2025, new rates of vehicle excise duty (VED, or car tax, or road tax) will be introduced across the UK that will see drivers face higher costs than before for their first year.

Road tax for electric vehicles (EVs) was previously 0%, but that has now been brought in line with petrol and diesel cars.

Expensive Car Supplement

Introduced in April 2017, the Expensive Car Supplement is an additional fee that’s part of the wider car tax system. It applies to vehicles with a list price exceeding £40,000, and requires owners to pay an additional £425 on top of their standard VED rate. This charge is levied for five years, following the initial VED payment. EVs were exempt from this surcharge to promote their adoption to begin with.

However, starting in 2025, changes to the road tax system will remove this exemption for EVs. Owners of EVs that meet or surpass the price threshold will also be subject to the supplement. This change is intended to ensure a more balanced taxation system, aligning contributions with the cost and impact of high-value vehicles on public infrastructure.
