Plymouth Arygle secured a third win of the EFL Championship season after a drama-filled final game before the international break at Home Park.

The Vertu Motors-backed side was bidding to bounce back from a narrow loss to Burnley in the previous game, but it was another North West side in the shape of Blackburn Rovers who had the better of the early stages.

Makhtar Gueye had already gone close before Andreas Weimann forced Daniel Grimshaw to make a quick reaction save, and that proved to be crucial in keeping the scores level before Argyle went up the other end to take the lead.

A break down the left hand side from Ibrahim Cissoko saw him drive into the box before crossing for Michael Obafemi to open the scoring after 15 minutes with his first goal for the club.

Once ahead, Plymouth continued to create the better chances, with captain Joe Edwards forcing Aynsley Pears into a fine stop to keep the lead at one in the second half.

Despite Argyle being the better side, Blackburn looked to have grabbed a point when Joe Rankin-Costello looped a header beyond Grimshaw and into the net with four minutes left, with Plymouth boss Wayne Rooney being sent off for arguing with the fourth official over what he felt was a foul in the lead up to the goal.

Deep into stoppage time however, Argyle’s talisman Morgan Whittaker was able to nod in a lopping headed cross from Adam Randell to grab the points that leave his side 14th in the table going into the break.

Next up is a trip to Wales to face Cardiff on 19 October.
