Plymouth Look Forward After Tough Easter
Plymouth Argyle are looking firmly to the future after a tough Easter weekend for the Vertu Motors-backed side saw it slip to 21st in the EFL Championship standings.
Argyle headed into the double-header on a difficult run of form having failed to win in the league since late February – and without a home goal in four games.
Good Friday saw the Pilgrims head to promotion-chasing Norwich City, and it was the visitors who hit the front early on when a cross from Matty Sorinola was headed into the net by talisman Morgan Whittaker for his 19th league goal of the campaign.
Norwich had the better chances through the remainder of the first half but were unable to draw level, and Argyle could have gone two clear just before the break had Ryan Hardie been able to convert from a tight angle.
Argyle were forced to pay the price for that miss when Josh Sargeant equalised with little over 20 minutes left, and the home side then grabbed the points seven minutes later when Ashley Phillips deflected a header past ‘keeper Mike Cooper for an unfortunate own goal.
Wins for both Stoke and QPR saw Plymouth slip to 20th in the table and added extra importance to the Easter Monday game with Bristol City at Home Park.
Argyle started well but would be unable to convert a number of chances in the opening half, and the visitors took full advantage after the break when substitute Nahki Wells nodded past Cooper to put City in front.
Plymouth’s bid to draw level wasn’t helped when Alfie Devine was send off for two bookings, with the defeat allowing Birmingham to move ahead in the table thanks to a home win over Preston.
Following the game, Argyle confirmed the departure of head coach Ian Foster, with Director of Football Neil Dewsnip taking control for the remaining six games this season alongside first-team coach Kevin Nancekivell.
