Plymouth Argyle will hope that the return to Home Park for the next game in the EFL Championship provides an upturn in fortunes after another difficult away day for Wayne Rooney’s side.

The Vertu Motors-backed side made the trip to Yorkshire to do battle with Leeds United on the back of a dramatic match against Preston North End had seen Argyle come from three goals down to grab a point thanks to a last minute goal from Morgan Whittaker.

Perhaps with one eye on the games to come, Argyle made six changes for the match and it was Leeds who dominated in the early stages – striking the woodwork and forcing Dan Grimshaw into a save on more than one occasion.

With Argyle struggling to get out of their own half, it was perhaps little surprise when Leeds grabbed the lead through a shot from outside the box from Dan James, and three minutes later, it was 2-0 as Joel Piroe stabbed the ball past Grimshaw from close range.

A lucky bounce then fell at the feet of Brenden Aaronson inside the box to put the home side three clear by half-time as it became a case of damage limitation for the Pilgrims in the second half.

It was the home side who continued to dominate proceedings as Argyle failed to fashion a chance at the other end, with Illan Meslier not having to make a save.

Argyle however were able to prevent Leeds from adding to their tally and whilst the defeat sees his side drop into the bottom three, Rooney will now hope that home support against Portsmouth will help to drive Plymouth to victory in the mid-week round of games.
