Plymouth Fight Hard Against Table Topping Baggies
Plymouth Argyle produced a battling performance against West Bromwich Albion before slipping to a narrow defeat in the latest round of EFL Championship fixtures.
Wayne Rooney’s had scored a first league win of the campaign in the first game after the international break at home to Sunderland, and faced another high-flying side in the shape of WBA – who had moved top of the table after Sunderland’s loss at Home Park.
Albion had the better of the opening moments of the game with Josh Maja going close to the opening goal within the first few minutes before Argyle grew into the game.
Ryan Hardie went close for the Vertu Motors-backed side as they looked to take the lead, before Karlan Ahearne-Grant fired in a shot that beat Dan Grimshaw before coming back off the post.
It wasn’t the only time that the woodwork would save Argyle from going behind as Alex Mowatt and John Swift both went close but the visitors were also able to fashion plenty of chances of their own on the break as Morgan Whittaker and Darko Gyabi in particular had opportunities to put their side in front.
Plymouth arguably had the better of the early stages of the second half as Whittaker again went close but the failure to take any of the chances available was ultimately punished when Maja tapped home just after the hour mark to give Albion the lead.
Argyle would be unable to fashion an equaliser before the finish and whilst that meant a third defeat in six league games, there was plenty of reason to cheer given the nature of the performance against a team that reclaimed top spot in the table with the victory.
Next up for Argyle is a home game against recently relegated Luton Town.
