Plymouth Argyle Prepare For New Era
Plymouth Argyle are preparing to enter a new era after the festive games in the EFL Championship brought an end to Wayne Rooney’s time in charge of the Pilgrims.
The Vertu-backed side had ended a four game losing run with a 3-3 draw at home to Middlesbrough, with the Boxing Day game seeing Argyle make the trip to the Midlands to face Coventry City.
Rooney’s injury hit side were overwhelmed at the CBS Arena as the home side scored four times before the break, with Tatsuhiro Sakamoto and Ephron Mason-Clark netting either side of a double from Josh Eccles.
Another away trip followed with a visit to Oxford United, who continued to benefit from a new manager bounce as they fought to a second straight win under Gary Rowett, with Ciaron Brown and Przemyslaw Placheta both on target for the home side.
That would prove to the final game for Rooney in charge as he departed by mutual consent on New Years Eve, with Kevin Nancekivell and Joe Edwards taking charge for the opening game of 2025 at home to Bristol City.
The visitors took the lead shortly after the half-hour mark when Anis Mehmeti scored his third goal against Argyle this season, but the Pilgrams battled back into the match and drew level shortly after the break when Morgan Whittaker crossed for Rami Al Hajj to fire in the equaliser.
Jason Knight put Bristol City back in front with a neat finish when he was played through but Argyle refused to give up and Julio Pleguezuelo chose the perfect time to open his account for the season in stoppage time to grab a point.
Argyle now have a busy month ahead that includes a tricky FA Cup third round tie away at Premier League Brentford.
