Plymouth Argyle Go Three Unbeaten After Late Drama

Plymouth Argyle’s unbeaten run in the EFL Championship now sits at three games after a dramatic end to the first game after the international break at Home Park.

The Vertu Motors-backed side had gone into the break on the back of a win against Portsmouth and a hard-fought away draw at Derby County, with Watford the visitors on Friday night.

The visitors had the better of the early play and took the lead within ten minutes when Yasser Larouci sent over a cross from the left that Vakoun Bayo was able to bundle the ball beyond ‘keeper Dan Grimshaw and into the net.

Watford continued to have the better of the play but Argyle then drew level in fine fashion when a long Crossfield pass from Lewis Gibson was taken on the volley by former Watford man Andre Gray – who volleyed across the goal and into the corner to make it 1-1.

Ryan Porteous missed a perfect chance to put Watford back ahead when he fired wide following a corner but he made amends before half-time when he charged onto a cross from Mattie Pollock to earn his side the half-time advantage.

In the second half, Watford should have wrapped up the points when Bayo was left one-on-one with Grimshaw but couldn’t beat the ‘keeper and that spurned Argyle on as the clock ticked down towards the final whistle.

Firstly, Callum Wright shot narrowly wide having managed to turn his man inside the box before Gray’s moment arrived with six minutes of stoppage time played and the game almost at an end.

With Argyle pressing hard to break down the Watford defence, the ball came to Mustapha Bundu on the edge of the D and he played the ball to Gray on the left-hand side, where he controlled the ball before firing in a curling effort that left Daniel Bachmann with no chance.

The point means Plymouth now sit 19th in the table ahead of the trip to Norwich City.
