Plymouth Argyle Bid To Battle Back From 'Hardest Week'

Plymouth Argyle will look to battle back from a week that manager Wayne Rooney described as his ‘hardest’ in management after a difficult away defeat at Bristol City.

The Vertu Motors-backed side had gone into the game at Ashton Gate bidding to bounce back from a 6-1 loss at Norwich City in the previous match.

The home side had a number of chances in the opening half as Dan Grimshaw was called on to make a series of saves to keep the scores level going into the break – with City having managed 13 shots compared to just one from the visitors and seeing an effort from Nahki Wells chalked off for offside.

Grimshaw continued to keep his side in it when the second half kicked off as Bristol City maintained their stranglehold on the game but he could do nothing just before the hour mark when an effort from Anis Mehmeti flicked off Scott Twine and into the net.

That goal opened the floodgates for the home side as Mehmeti added a second within five minutes after he cut in from the wing to fire beyond Grimshaw and into the corner.

Mehmeti doubled up for his sixth of the season to put the game beyond Argyle, with Sinclair Armstrong adding the fourth in stoppage time to leave Plymouth sitting just outside the drop zone.

Two huge games now follow at Home Park, with Oxford United and Swansea City visiting in the next week as Plymouth bid to return to winning ways.
