Nottinghamshire Score Second Blast Win In Three
Nottinghamshire’s recovery from a nightmare start to the Vitality Blast season continued with a second win in three games, this time against Derbyshire at Trent Bridge.
The Vertu Motors-backed side had scored a first win of the campaign against Worcestershire before rain prevented a result from being possible against Durham, with another win vital to retain any hope of progression to the knock out stages.
Nottinghamshire elected to bat first in the tie and made a solid start to score 59 from the powerplay for the loss of just one wicket, with Ben Martindale being removed for 16 off the bowling of Pat Brown.
Joe Clarke fell in controversial fashion for 47 having initially stood his ground when Daryn Dupavillon claimed a catch, with Alex Hales the following shortly afterwards to leave his side on 96-3 approaching the half-way point of the innings.
After the departure of Jack Haynes, Tom Moores and Matthew Montgomery were able to hit out in the second part of the innings to help their side to reach a total of 173-5, giving the bowlers something to try and defend when Derbyshire then went in to bat.
After losing David Lloyd in the third over Aneurin Donald went on to the attack for the visitors to smash 52 off 26 balls – including no fewer than five sixes – to help his side to reach 70 off the powerplay.
Donald fell shortly after that and was followed two balls later by Zak Chappell without scoring to leave Derbyshire on 74-3 and although Wayne Madsen managed a solid 40 before being one of two victims of Ben Lister on his final appearance, the visitors were unable to reach their target.
A total of 165-8 left them nine shy of what was required, with the win lifting Nottinghamshire off the bottom of the northern group.
