Nottinghamshire secured a first victory of the County Championship season with an impressive nine-wicket win at home to Lancashire at Trent Bridge.

Lancashire opted to bat first in the fifth game of the season, with Notts grabbing an early wicket when opener Luke Wells was caught at slip with the score on just 23.

Captain Keaton Jennings hit 91 before falling just before tea with the Lancashire middle order being ripped out in the final part of the day when Dillon Pennington took three wickets in five overs.

It means Lancashire ended day one on 306-8 having at one stage been 190-2, with brief resistance on the second morning before the visitors were all out for 331.

Nottinghamshire looked like facing a challenge to try and reach that target when Ben Slater and Luke Young were both dismissed within the first 20 overs, with Joe Clarke and Will Moores also falling cheaply with the score on little more than 100.

Captain Haseeb Hameed was in fine form however and although wickets continued to fall around him, he ended the day unbeaten on 137, with Nottinghamshire having reached 279-7 to trail by 52 runs.

Bowler Olly Stone would prove to be an unlikely partner in a 163 run stand for the eighth wicket as he hit 90 before being bowled by Tom Bailey, with Hameed left to steer his side to 503 all out having carried his bat for 247.

Pennington then took charge with the ball to take three wickets as Lancashire slumped to 100-6 at the close, with Matty Hurst and Tom Hartley putting on a brave display to take their side to 252 all out on the final day.

It left Nottinghamshire needing just 81 for victory and despite losing Slater for 31, the home side reached the target with ease to pick up 22 points – leaving the Trent Bridge side fourth in the standings.
