Mazda Showcases Sustainable Fuel With Baltic To Arctic Trip
Mazda has used a special trip from the Baltic to the Arctic to showcase the potential of sustainable fuels as an alternative option for drivers in the coming years.
A fleet of twelve Mazda CX-30s took part in the trip that started in the Swedish city of Malmo before heading across Finland and into Norway and the coastal town of Tromso – a distance of 1,344 miles that took the cars over 200 miles north of the arctic circle.
Each of the cars was powered by the new engine recently added to the CX-30 line-up; a 140ps e-Skyactiv D 2.5-litre petrol unit that is coupled to Mazda’s M Hybrid mild-hybrid system.
However, rather than running on a traditional fossil fuel, each car used a 100 per cent biofuel manufactured from agricultural waste that would not otherwise be used for animal or human consumption.
That led to an extensive reduction in the amount of CO2 produced across the journey, with the biofuels utilising carbon already in the atmosphere rather than released through the processes required to produce a traditional fossil fuel.
“At Mazda we will continue to develop the internal combustion engine to meet consumer demand in parallel with our battery electric development, as part of our multi-solution approach,” Jeremy Thomson, Managing Director, Mazda Motors UK, said.
“In Japan we are researching and developing engines to run on biofuel as well as algae fuels and synthetic fuels, and in Europe we are a member of the e-fuel alliance.
“Our drive to the very north of Europe demonstrates the capability of the Mazda CX-30 in extreme conditions and the benefits of the internal combustion engine and advanced biofuels. In total we will have saved approximately 317kg of CO2 per car on a 1300-mile journey by using SUSTAIN advanced biofuel”.
The twelve cars required no modifications to run on the sustainable fuel, and averaged more than 40mpg during the trip.
