Land Rover Defender Named 'Best Large SUV For Off-Roading' By What Car?
What Car? have revealed the winners of their 2021 ‘What Car? Car of the Year’ Awards, in which the categories reflect the best of the best from the past year.
What Car?’s team of judges crowned a range of ‘best buy’ winners, including the large Defender 110 P300 for its invincible off-road abilities.
What Car? judges highlighted the clear influence the current Discovery and ultra-premium Range Rover have had on the reborn icon, noting there being no separate chassis or rigid axles. However, What Car? warned that that doesn’t mean the Defender had ‘gone soft’.
The new Defender still boasts more suspension travel and ground clearance than most of its siblings.
It’s packed with advanced technology for off-roading superiority, including permanent four-wheel drive and a Terrain Response system that enables you to optimise your Defender for different conditions (or just select an automatic setting).
What Car? applauded the all-new Defender’s ClearSight Ground View, which lets you see tricky obstacles underneath the front of the car.
Although the judges commended the Defender for being more polished, with improved features for driver comfort and utility, they revealed it’s ‘actually more capable in the rough than its predecessor’.
Praise didn’t stop there – What Car? recognised the Defender as a solid all-rounder too, commenting: ‘With modern mechanicals, the Defender impresses on the road too; its steering lets you place the car exactly where you want it and its suspension takes the sting out of vicious bumps and potholes.’
The What Car? judges’ final remark declared the Defender ‘far more civilised’ than its rivals.
