How to Improve the Range of Your Electric Car

So, you’ve bought an electric car and now you are wondering how you can make the most of your range? It’s actually quite simple. With just a few changes to your driving habits you can enjoy a more efficient drive and prolong the lifespan of your car’s range.
1. Accelerate gently
It can be tempting to put your foot down, especially when pulling away from traffic lights. But in doing so, you are decreasing your range and draining your battery. Always make sure to gently accelerate and reap the lower energy consumption benefits.
2. Slow down
The optimum efficient speed for petrol or diesel cars is around 50mph, however this is slightly less in electric cars. Essentially the faster you drive, the more energy you will consume, and you could see your range go down. While it’s always important to adhere to speed limits and not drive too slowly. Reducing your speed will help in the long run to maximise the range of your car.
3. Make use of regenerative braking
Most (if not all) electric cars are now equipped with regenerative braking. This system works by capturing energy lost from braking and converting it into power. Always make sure you have this feature turned on and leave plenty of time to brake as coming to a sudden stop can reduce its impact.
4. Turn down heating or air conditioning
Overuse of air conditioning and heating is the biggest culprit when it comes to depleting your EV’s range. But that’s not to say you have to sit and suffer in extreme temperatures to maximise your range.
Many electric cars now offer pre-conditioning to help you set the temperature before you even leave your house. By doing this, you can protect your precious range whilst still driving comfortably.
5. Monitor your tyre pressure
It’s important to regularly check your tyre pressure whatever type of car you drive. But did you know that under inflated tyres can negatively impact the range of an EV? This is because the amount of friction is increased and the tyres have to work harder, which in turn uses more energy and reduces the range.

6. Don’t overcharge your car
It might seem counterintuitive not to fully charge your electric car, but it has many benefits. It’s recommended that you only power up from 20-80% and not every day, unless it’s necessary. Overcharging can negatively affect battery performance and ultimately reduce your range.
7. Check battery health
Many EV’s now have smartphone apps that display information on range, as well as your battery’s long-term health. Always be sure to keep an eye on this and service your electric car in line with manufacturer guidelines.
8. Travel lightly
Unless you are heading on a road trip, try not to overpack your car as this can reduce your range. The heavier the car, the more energy that will be consumed.
9. Avoid motorways if possible
While it’s not always possible to avoid motorways during your daily commute, if you can, your EV will thank you. The faster your travel, the more energy is used, and you might see your range gradually tick down. If you do have to use motorways, plan your journey in advance to include EV charging points along the way.

10. Store your EV in a garage
Not everyone is fortunate enough to have access to off-street parking, but if you do, it’s important to utilise it as an EV owner. Freezing or boiling temperatures can take their toll on electric car batteries and kill your range. If you can store your car in a garage away from the elements, your range will benefit.
