England Legend Named As Argyle Head Coach
Manchester United and England legend Wayne Rooney will lead Plymouth Argyle into the 2024/25 EFL Championship season after being named as the new head coach of the Vertu Motors-backed side.
The 38-year-old replaces Ian Foster, who left the club in early April before director of football Neil Dewsnip led Argyle to safety during his second spell in temporary charge.
After a career in which is scored more than 300 goals at club level and a further 53 for England, a record beaten only by Harry Kane, Rooney moved into management for the first time at Derby County when he was given the chance to replace Phillip Cocu.
Saving the club from the drop, Rooney was then unable to keep Derby in the Championship in the 2021/22 season after a total of 21 points were deducted for a combination of financial irregularities and entering administration.
Following a spell in the USA with DC United, Rooney returned to the English leagues for a short spell with Birmingham City and now takes up a new role at Home Park ahead of the summer break.
“Taking this role at Plymouth Argyle feels like the perfect next step in my career – and I would like to thank the Chairman and Board for the faith they have shown in me,” he said.
“This is an opportunity to be part of an exciting project. I look forward to helping to build a squad of players to play expansive football – and to entertain the Green Army.
“I have experienced first-hand how talented the existing group of players is here – and also the incredible atmosphere at Home Park. The club is on an exciting long-term journey, with a progressive plan in place. I am grateful for the opportunity to be part of it.
“I can’t wait for the Championship season to start in August.”
