BYD Announces New Super e-Platform With 'Megawatt' Charging

BYD has announced the creation of a new Super e-Platform that it says will revolutionise the EV market, ending charge anxiety and ‘matching the refuelling speeds of combustion-engined vehicles’.

The new platform has been comprehensively upgraded when compared to those currently being used to allow for charging power up to one megawatt, which far exceeds anything else available on the market.

The platform is set to be introduced in China on the Han L and Tang L models, with the ability to add 400km of range in just five minutes when paired with new superchargers that the manufacturer plans to construct across the country.

“To completely eliminate users’ charging anxiety, our goal is to make EV charging as fast as refuelling a gasoline car,” Wang Chuanfu, Chairman and President of BYD Group said, “achieving ‘oil-electric parity’ in charging speed.”

The Super e-Platform will provide single power-motor output of 580kW and is able to provide high top speeds and acceleration thanks to the fact that the motor can operate at up to 30,000rpm – a new benchmark for mass-production vehicles.

It remains to be seen whether UK-spec models will be made available with the new technology, down in part to the fact that current infrastructure would not be able to maximise the charging potential of the platform.
