Burnley Suffer Heart-Breaking Brighton Draw
Burnley were left to rue a mistake from goalkeeper Arijanet Muric after missing out on a vital three points against Brighton.
The Clarets were keen to bounce back from a 1-0 loss to Everton in the previous match, which had ended a run of four games without defeat, with Vincent Kompany and his side trying to close the gap to the teams ahead in the Premier League standings.
Burnley were left frustrated by the failure to award a penalty in the first half after a possible foul on Wilson Odobert, whilst Jacob Bruun Larsen and David Datro Fofano both missed chances to open the scoring – with Bruun Larsen in particular left to wonder how he failed to convert from close range.
After Brighton spurned chances of their own, the opening goal finally arrived with 16 minutes left to play, albeit in somewhat fortuitous fashion.
Josh Brownhill chased down a short backpass from Calos Baleba and when Brighton ‘keeper Bart Verbruggen came out to try and clear the ball, it cannoned off Brownhill and into the net.
That goal was similar to the one Burnley had conceded against Everton a week earlier but just four minutes later, a catastrophic error from Muric saw the visitors equalise.
As Burnley passed the ball around outside their own box, Sander Berge played a ball back to the ‘keeper but Muric failed to control the pass, which rolled under his heel and into the net.
Next up is a huge game against Sheffield United this weekend, with three points vital in the quest to retain a place in the Premier League for another season.
