Burnley Maintain Promotion Push As Unbeaten Run Goes On
Burnley’s unbeaten run in the EFL Championship was extended to 26 games during March as the Clarets continued to push for an immediate return to the top flight of English football.
The Vertu-backed side headed into a new month sitting four points off top spot in the table and in the heart of a three-way battle with Leeds United and Sheffield United for the two automatic promotion spots.
March began with a trip to Preston North End in the fifth round of the FA Cup, where a much-changed side was beaten 3-0 as manager Scott Parker put his focus firmly on the league campaign.
That campaign continued in Wales with a trip to Cardiff City, where goals from Josh Brownhill and Maxime Esteve in the opening 40 minutes out the visitors two goals clear and en-route to victory – although Cardiff did the unthinkable by pulling one back before the break through Yousef Salech.
That marked the first goal Burnley had conceded in the league in 2025, a record going back 1,132 minutes.
It was business as usual at the back in the following game however, with a seventh successive clean sheet as Turf Moor as Luton Town were comfortably beaten from the second time this season.
An own goal from Mark McGuinness with Luton already down to ten men opened the scoring before Lyle Foster doubled the advantage before the break as he netted for the first time in the Championship since August.
Brownhill added a third early in the second half, with a comprehensive win secured in stoppage time through Ashley Barnes; his first goal since returning to the Club from Norwich City during the transfer window.
After then being forced to settle for a point from a 1-1 home draw with West Brow, where Zian Flemming cancelled out John Swift’s free-kick for the visitors, Burnley headed into the international break with a comfortable win over Swansea City, with Brownhill netting again from close range before Jaidon Anthony added a second.
It was a win that secured a place in the record books as James Trafford was again unbeaten at the back – with 27 clean sheets being a record for the second tier of the English game.
Flemming’s free-kick would be the difference against Bristol City in the final game of the month at Turf Moor to leave Burnley sitting third in the standings but only behind Leeds on goal difference, with Sheffield United two points clear at the top.
April kicks off with a tricky trip to Coventry City and also includes a home tie against the current league leaders that could play a key role in deciding who gains promotion.
