Burnley Grab Vital Away Win In Historic Match
Vertu Motors-backed Burnley secured a vital third victory of the Premier League season to rise off the bottom of the table over the festive round of fixtures.
A disappointing 2-0 loss at home to Everton – along with results elsewhere – had seen the Clarets slip to the bottom of the table and at risk of hitting Christmas propping up the division.
All eyes were on the trip to Fulham in the final game before Christmas as Premier League history was made – with Rebecca Welch becoming the first female referee to take charge of a game.
Fulham created plenty of chances in the first half but were unable to beat James Trafford, and having kept the home side at bay, Burnley then hit the front after the break thanks to a fine curling effort from Wilson Odobert.
That boosted confidence amongst the visiting side and Sander Berge smashed in the second from the edge of the box to lift Burnley above Sheffield United in the standings and off the bottom.
The final home game of the year threw up a huge challenge as Liverpool arrived at Turf Moor looking to reclaim top spot in the table.
Although Darwin Nunez put the visitors ahead early on, Burnley were able to stay in contention thanks to a number of impressive saves from Trafford but were unable to put the Liverpool goal under serious pressure in the quest for an equaliser.
Diego Jota eventually added a second late on as Burnley slipped to defeat and they head to Aston Villa for the final game of 2023 sitting five points from safety.
