Burnley will return to the Premier League after a single season after Scott Parker’s side successfully secured promotion from the EFL Championship with two games of the campaign left to play.

The Vertu-backed side had endured disappointment at the end of last season when the Clarets suffered relegation back to the second tier, with manager Vincent Kompany then departing to join Bayern Munich.

With Parker coming in to replace him, and a busy summer that saw the squad undergo a number of changes, Burnley started well with nine goals in the opening two games of the season before a disappointing loss on the road at Sunderland in game three.

That however would be one of only two defeats suffered in the league, with the Club unbeaten since the second of those losses away at Millwall in November.

It means Burnley are one of only two teams in the top four divisions to be unbeaten at home, with just one match at Turf Moor left to play.

Having gone 30 games unbeaten since the Millwall loss, Burnley went into the Bank Holiday Monday game at home to Sheffield United aware that victory over the team sitting third in the table would be enough to earn promotion.

The visitors had chances to take the lead before Burnley hit the front, with Josh Brownhill driving in from close range after ‘keeper Michael Cooper had managed to keep out an effort from Josh Cullen.

Tom Cannon achieved the rare feat of beating James Trafford to equalise for the Blades but a penalty on the stroke of half-time from Brownhill was enough to secure all three points and take Burnley back into the top flight.

With two games left to play against QPR and Millwall, Burnley sit level on points at the top with Leeds United and will need to better their rivals results in order to secure the title – with Leeds having a vastly superior goal difference.

Leeds themselves face games against a Bristol City side looking to secure a play-off spot as well as Plymouth Argyle – who may well need to win the game in order to avoid relegation.

As well breaking a 104-year-old record for the longest unbeaten run in Club history, Burnley remain on track to earn the best goals-per-game conceded record in English league history – which will be secured as long as the Clarets don’t concede more than two goals in the final two matches of the season.
