Birmingham City Move Second With Fourth Straight Win

Birmingham City secured a fourth successive EFL League One win to move into the automatic promotion spots as the battle for the top two continues to heat up.

The Vertu-backed side went into the home game with Bristol Rovers sitting third in the standings behind Wycombe Wanderers and Wrexham, with the leading trio covered by just a single point.

The home side were on the front foot from the very start at St Andrew’s @ Knightshead Park and took the lead with little more than six minutes on the clock, when a corner from the right hand side was only cleared as far as Lee Buchanan on the edge of the box.

His left-footed half-volley flew through a crowd of players and into the net beyond Josh Griffiths to give the home side the lead, and Birmingham continued to control proceedings before going two up shortly before the break.

This time, an effort from Alfie May was handled inside the box and from the resultant penalty kick, and Jay Stansfield duly beat the keeper.

Stansfield then had an effort blocked to keep the half-time score at 2-0, with the Blues spurning plenty of chances to add to their tally in the second half.

The victory however moved Birmingham ahead of Wrexham in the standings, with the Welsh side held to a draw when they played on Sunday.

Birmingham’s final game before Christmas is a trip to Crawley Town on 23 December.
