Birmingham City sit well placed at the head of EFL League One after an unbeaten January that also included progress in two cup competitions.

The Vertu-backed side had slipped to second in the table following a 1-1 draw at Stockport County on New Years Day but wasted little time in returning to winning ways three days later during a trip to Wigan Athletic.

Two goals in the opening half an hour from Alfie May put the Blues in control of the game, with Willum Willumsson completing a fine team move on the hour to wrap up a 3-0 victory.

With Wycombe Wanderers dropping points, the win moved Birmingham back to the top of the table ahead of two big cup matches, which resulted in a 2-1 win at home to Lincoln City in the third round of the FA Cup and a late winner away at Swindon Town to progress in the Vertu Trophy.

League action resumed back at St Andrew’s where a single goal from Ethan Laird was enough to see off the challenge of Exeter City before one of the biggest games of the season at the Racecourse Ground against promotion rivals Wrexham.

The Welsh side was defending an unbeaten home record this season and weathered the storm in the opening moments before hitting the front when Ollie Rathbone curled a shot into the net from outside the box.

The lead lasted less than ten minutes before Lyndon Dykes headed into the equaliser for Birmingham, and both sides had chances to win the game before being forced to settle for a point.

Birmingham extended their unbeaten record in the league out to a dozen matches in the final game of the month, with Keshi Anderson bagging the only goal on the trip to Huddersfield Town.

The Blues will go into February sitting two points clear of Wycombe at the top of the table having played two fewer games and now face a busy month that includes a trip to Stevenage in the Vertu Trophy quarter-finals and a huge home tie with Newcastle United in the FA Cup.
