Ben Duckett Stars For Notts In Warwickshire Draw
Ben Duckett produced one of the best batting performances of the County Championship season to date with a double century as Nottinghamshire picked up a draw with Warwickshire at Edgbaston.
Notts had gone into the game buoyed by a stunning performance from Joe Clarke and Will Young in the previous match against Somerset, where the pair had set a new third-wicket partnership of 392 en-route to a draw.
Whilst that partnership came as Notts fought to save the game, Duckett’s innings came when his side went in to bat first although it wasn’t clear if that was a wise move when captain Haseeb Hameed fell in the sixth over.
Duckett however then added 146 with Ben Slater and was also well supported by Jack Haynes as he batted through the opening day to reach 197 not out, with his side on 367-8.
He would move on to 218 on a rain-affected second day before Notts were dismissed for 400, with Warwickshire reaching just 71-3 in reply from the available play, with Dillon Pennington dismissing both Alex Davies and Will Rhodes for single-figure scores and opener Rob Yates also falling cheaply.
Further rain on day three meant just 35 overs were possible as Warwickshire progressed to 175-5 and day four then dawned with few expecting any result other than a draw – unless Notts were able to quickly wrap up the home side’s opening innings.
Instead, Jake Bethell hit 93 to ensure that Warwickshire avoided the follow-on having reached 361 before being bowled out and Notts batted out the final two hours to hit 75-1 for one by the close of play.
A 15 point haul from the game leaves the Vertu Motors-backed side seventh in the standings.
