Audi Reveals Details Of A5 PHEV Ahead Of Summer Launch

Audi has confirmed details of the plug-in hybrid version of the all-new A5, which will be launched later this year.

The new A5 was launched late last year as the replacement for the A4 as part of a now dropped new naming structure, with the car originally available with either petrol or diesel engines, and as either a saloon or an estate.

The PHEV version of the A5 – which will be known as the A5 e-hybrid – will be powered by a 2.0 litre TFSI engine that operates alongside a high-voltage 25.9kWh battery, delivering a combined total of 295bhp compared to a maximum of 200bhp in the combustion version.

The battery, which can be charged in full in 2.5 hours, will provide an all-electric range of up to 67 miles on UK-spec models and can also be recharged via regenerative braking – which can be adapted via paddles behind the steering wheel to maximise battery life when running in hybrid mode.

That helps to give the A5 combined fuel consumption figures of up to 141mpg.

“The increased electric range of our new plug-in hybrids enables our customers to cover the majority of their daily journeys using only electric power,” Geoffrey Bouquot, Member of the Board of Management for Technical Development at AUDI AG, said.

“Our hybrid technology combines the best of both worlds and provides a high degree of flexibility for everyday life. And with the new technology designation ‘e-hybrid,’ this is now also recognisable at first glance.”

Sales are set to begin in May with the first cars reaching customers in the middle of summer.

Both the saloon and estates will be offered in four different trims, starting from £48,950 and £50,850 on the road respectively.
